The Maxi Maxi: Tuesday's Yea or Nay

So, last couple of seasons has brought us midis and maxis, midis and maxis.    That ain't nothin'...Now we have come across the maxi's maxi at Christian Siriano Spring 2012.

Gorgeous velvet for miles, and paired with adorable stripes.  Oh my, what a lovely color.

But oh my, what a difficult look to pull off, because gorgeous velvet for miles must come with legs for miles.  We say...YEA.  We love - but proceed with caution.  Thoughts?

Shopgirl Recs: La Michoacana Taqueria: A Review!

436 Highway 1 West (near Paul’s Discount)
Iowa City
319-341-TACO
Hours:  Tues-Sun 10-9
Take-out available

I had always heard such great things about the taco truck, how delicious and authentic the tacos were etc. but I could never make it out there for some reason.  And it turns out I missed it.  The taco truck is no longer.   But it’s not really gone, it’s just been turned into a little restaurant near Paul’s Discount.  Hurray!  A couple of Sundays ago my family and I came out to La Michoacana Taqueria’s to give these tacos a try.

La Michoacana Taqueria translates basically to Michoacan taco restaurant.  Michoacan is a southern state in Mexico, often referred to as the “soul of Mexico”.  So it’s not far off to say the food served here is something like Mexican soul food.  And that’s exactly how I’d describe it.  The menu has expanded some since the taco truck days and is divided into several delicious categories;  tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas, tostadas, a small veggie section, nachos, a small kids menu and combination plates which include rice, beans, and tortillas.

Since it was my first time, I had to have a taco and with the suggestion of the man at the counter I ordered 2 tacos asada (steak) just as they come, in a corn tortilla with cilantro, onion, and a lime on the side.   So simple but so good.   My husband ordered tacos al pastor (marinated pork), and the little one had a cheese quesadilla, which she ate all of (and she doesn’t eat just any quesadilla).  To drink I had a Jarritos mandarin soda, sweet and citrusy  and the perfect compliment to my tacos.  I have to say I feel a little silly having taken so long to come here.  This place is definitely kid friendly, affordable, and a great place to stop for a quick delicious Mexican meal.  They even have a meat market/ Mexican grocer next door where you can buy everything from meat to spices, produce, and Mexican candy and ice cream.  We’ve come here at least twice a week since our first meal and I haven’t been disappointed yet :-)

P.S.  I highly recommend the California burrito, not really authentic but it contains french fries which is a nice little treat.  Also the fajita burrito is good.
And if you're coming for dinner on the weekend, it can get busy so be prepared for a little wait.

Thursday Drool: Dream Shoes Now at Revival

We don't usually like to do Thursday Drools on in store resale items.  Drools are for fantasy items, not the attainable!  This is a VERY special situation.  Because attainable or not, this Shopgirl has made a fool of herself over these shoes.  It feels as though someone reached into our brain and custom created shoes just for us (but got the size wrong).

Loeffler Randall Washed Out Cheetah Ankle Boots (this pair really hurts our heart)
Size 9.5 - $124

BE&D Studded Stiletto Mary Janes (seriously INCREDIBLE)
Size 9.5- $106

DKNY Spotted Pony Hair Stiletto Lace Ups (so fantastically Cruella DeVille-one of our style icons)
Size 10 - $68

Come and snag them friends, because this baby footed Shopgirl can only dream and drool.

Shopgirl Styles: You Can Never Have Too Many Red Shoes...

So says Shopgirl Anna...

"I feel everyone should have at least one pair of red shoes.  They are equal parts mood and confidence builder the moment I put them on my feet.  I like to have a pair for every possible occasion. "

Starting from the back right:

1. Vintage Gloria Vanderbilt Suede Booties- "I found them at Revival my second week of working there. I knew at that moment that I was going to love working here.

2. Vintage Justin's Cherry Red Work Boots- "These gems took me all through the winter.  They are work boots, so the more you wear them, the better they look!  Found at Black Cat Vintage in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, one of my favorite places."

3. My red Saltwaters -"My go-to Summer shoe this year."

4. Vintage Stuart Weitzman Suede Low-Heeled Flats- "Given to me by a family friend who noticed my little red shoe problem.  Not pictured are the awesome gold studs on the back."

5. Brandless Cork Wedges w/ Ankle Strap- "Purchased over 10 years ago, still extremely wearable.  The leather flower and ankle strap give every look a bit of a 'pin up' touch."

6. Vintage Etienne Aigner Leather Loafers- "Scored last week at Revival!  Oooooooh, I can't wait for Fall.  It will be full of adorable ankle socks, cuffed jeans and these bad boys."

Vintage vs. Prada

Shopgirl Liz noticed something looked a touch familiar in this Fall 2012 Prada ad in W Magazine.  We'll take the vintage version please.  Well, we would certainly take Prada too.
