Vegan Goodness: Pickle Power

***Hey, friends!  Let's give a warm welcome to our newest guest blogger,  Theresa of Vegan Goodness.  You may recognize her from behind the Revival counter where she has been Shopgirling for the last few years.  Once a month she will share her passion for vegan cooking, baking, and lifestyle with us at Revival, and we feel pretty lucky.***

There's been a lot of talk on the art of pickles in the blogosphere lately, I'm looking at you, Iowa City!  Well, Vegan Goodness has it's own pickle adventure to share.

I grew up on homemade pickles. The walls of my childhood home never contained store bought pickles and I have always wanted to pick up that torch in my own abode. Canning, though, is a process I have yet to master or attempt, but I now know how to make spicy refrigerator pickles!

If you're like me and are intimidated by the canning process, try this refrigerator pickle recipe I adapted from here:

First, go to the Iowa City Farmer's Market because it kicks ass and buy yourself some cukes and you might as well buy yourself some garlic cloves while you're at it since you'll need that, too.

I used an old honey jar and a glass canister with a metal wire clamp. The honey jar style would make a nice gift although I ate all of mine  before I had a chance to share.

Then follow this fairly simple recipe:
12  3 to 4 inch cucumbers*, quartered lengthwise
2 cups water
1 3/4 cups white vinegar
1 1/2 cups chopped fresh dill weed
2-3 tablespoons  white sugar
8 cloves garlic, chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons coarse salt
1 tablespoon pickling spice
1 1/2 teaspoons dill seed
1/2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
4 sprigs fresh dill weed

*I didn't specifically use pickling cucumbers but you certainly can.

Combine the cucumbers, water, vinegar, chopped dill, sugar, garlic, salt, pickling spice, dill seed, and red pepper flakes into a large bowl. Stir and let stand at room temperature for 2 hours, until the sugar and salt dissolve.

Remove the cucumbers and place them in the sanitized jars. You will need two or three, depending on the size of the jars. I ran mine under extremely hot water after thoroughly washing them. If you have a dishwasher, use the sanitize option for best results.

Ladle the liquid from the bowl to cover. Place a sprig of fresh dill into each jar and tighten the lids. Refrigerate for 10 days before eating.  Use within 1 month.

I bought all of my ingredients at either the farmer's market or the New Pioneer Food Coop. Buying the spices in bulk is great because you can buy the exact amount you need and not have a surplus of random ingredients left over.

Oh the Places We Go! Shopgirl Teah in Cape Cod: Part 2

Part 2 of Shpgrl Teah's Spontaneous Road Trip all the way to the Atlantic Ocean!  Let's get back to all kinds of adorable Cape Cod adventures (and OUTFITS!)

Day 3: This was what we were waiting for. We woke up to mimosas and the ocean and spent the entire day hypnotized by the cape. We were all doing our own things, reading on the sand, swimming, playing football on the beach, drinking wine in the hammocks. It was one of the most magical days I can remember, pure adventure and leisure. Those ocean waves are something I can't shake. I spent the entire day in my bathing suit and secondhand Anthropologie romper from the store. Afterwards some of us changed into some fancier get-ups and checked out an old townie bar.

Day 3 Outfit:  Atlantic Ocean Style

  • Revival Resale Anthropologie Romper
  • Vintage Brown Leather Belt from Revival
  • Mirrored Sunnies from Revival
  • Vintage Silver Bracelet from Revival
  • Saltwaters!!

Flying flags & drinking mimosas
The Atlantic!
Day 3 Night: Town Bar Style (guess what?  It's all from Revival :)

Day 4: We had all been bothering Greg to take us to a lighthouse, so we drove a few miles down the shore to one. We spent some time taking photos and then went to a little beach town. While some of us went to an aquarium, Mollie, Zoey, and I decided to walk around a little. We found a candy shop! Later that night, we grabbed some beer, had a cute little candlelit dinner, and laid by the beach reading every one's astrological birth charts! We couldn't stop laughing. It was so perfect.

Day 4 Outfit: Light House Luxury

  • Vintage Cut Off Shorts
  • Thrifted Navy Chevron Tank
  • Tortoise Shell Sunnies from Revival
  • Vintage Silver Bracelet
  • Tan Saltwaters!

Day 5: For our last day on the cape, we took a short ferry rendezvous to Martha's Vineyard to do some touristy stuff. The homes were so cute - like little gingerbread houses. I wore more stripes - the Angie "Everyday Perfection" dress. It was perfect. We spent some time in the ocean, but when we got back to the cape, we were exhausted. We all lounged on the beach watching the full moon on the water. It was so hard to leave.

Day 5 Outfit:

  • Chevron Everyday Perfection Dress (sold out at Revival, but coming soon in an adorable tribal print)
  • Tortoise Shell Sunnies from Revival
  • Vintage Black Belt
  • Arrowhead Necklace from Serafina (so cute.  come see it at Revival)
  • Tan Saltwaters (can't go wrong)

Le sigh...

Oh the Places We Go! Shopgirl Teah in Cape Cod: Part 1

Every so often I get that travel bug, the itch only movement and change can suppress. My girlfriends (Mollie, Therese, and Zoey) were all planning a 20 hour van ride to visit a good friend in Cape Cod. Last minute, I spontaneously decided to tag along, and this spur-of-the-moment road trip from Iowa City to the Atlantic Ocean (my first time!)  became one of the most defining decisions I've made.

Day 1:  The Comfiest/Most Van Appropriate Outfit I Own

Day 1: Van Cozy
  • Resale Harem Pants from Revival
  • Favorite Elephant Shirt from Revival
  • Leather & Metal bracelet by MADE from Revival
  • Mirrored Sunnies from Revival

Determined to make the trip in one day, we all packed into Therese's van and set up camp on the floor where we pulled out the seats in the back in order to take shifts. We stopped along the way to stretch our legs occasionally, but when we finally made it to Boston (where we were going to spend a part of the next day) we were beyond delirious.

Van time

Day 2: Big City Romping

Day 2: Boston Romping

The most eventful day of the trip!  Our host Greg (Therese's good friend) played tour guide showed us around Boston. I don't consider myself a big fan of city life, but Boston was pretty incredible. There is so much history jammed into this adorable little place. The cemeteries we visited were incredible and the harbor was beyond beautiful.  Old cutoffs and salt waters were perfect for bumming around in Boston.

After we explored a bit more, we packed back into the van and made our way to the cape. On the way we stopped in Plymouth to check out Plymouth Rock, which was extremely tiny and disappointing. We thought it was hilarious. When we finally made it to Greg's home in Cape Cod, we were blown away. The ocean was breathtaking, and our temporary beach was something straight out of a movie.

Mollie bumming around town

Look at Plymouth Rock.  It's just so tiny.
Stay tuned for more of Teah's East Coast, beach going, late summertime road trip adventures!!  Also staying tuned for even more adorable outfits!

Hello! My name is Shopgirl Hännah

All hail the New Kid on the Block!!  While Shopgirl Hännah (pronounced Haaaaa-nah) has been with us for about 6 months or so, she is still stuck with the newbie title (we don't get much turnover at Revival).  With a sharp sense of humor, a great rapport with customers, and an impressive way with store displays, Shopgirl Hännah fit right in and quickly became a important part of the Revival clan.
When it comes to her own style (undoubtedly influenced by her time abroad working in art galleries in London), Hännah can appreciate a well-placed stud, butter soft leather, and a little rock and roll.   So next time you are in Revival, say 'Hello!'  She won't bite, unless you try to steal her luxuriousness (see below).

Hannah wears some of her favorite items from Revival's new Fall collection.

Name: Hännah Marie Korpel

Age: 23

Hometown: Iowa City

Hobbies/Outside Interests: Biggest interest recently has been teaching myself the basics of graphic design and photography.  Otherwise my hobbies are general adventuring around Iowa City.

Style Icon: I don't have one style icon; I'm mostly inspired by street fashion.  My favorite street style blogs are The Sartorialist, Lookbook, Jak & Jil, & Face Hunter.

Favorite Fabric: Cotton.  It's versatile and there's nothing like snuggling into the softness of your mom's old, threadbare, college tee.

Favorite Brand/Designer: Helmut Lang for class and MSGM for quirkiness.

Spirit Animal: So, I asked my friend this and here is her reply:

So yeah.  That little white fur ball pretty much sums me up.

DJ or Live Band: oh gosh, it depends.

Flares, Wide Legs, or Skinny Jeans: Skinnies!!!

Signature Accessory: My turquoise ring from my dad

Fave Current Trend: Midi rings & vibrantly colored, mirrored sunnies!

Favorite Drink/Cocktail: PBR or whiskey sour

Currently Iowa City Eats fave: Masala

Preferred IC nightspot: The Mill

What do you love about Iowa City?  To a degree, Iowa City has the charm of a small town with a diversity in culture of a big city.  Though sometimes you have to hunt it out, but that's what's fun, right?

Dogs or Cats: KITTIES!  This is my Sofie:

My friends think she is hostile, but she is just opinionated on who she would like to be around.  Plus, look how adorable she looks!

Favorite TV show: Of all time???? Definitely Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Current Beauty Product Obsession: L'Oreal Liquid Intense eyeliner- every girl should have a good, black eyeliner for when she's feeling sassy.  And Chapstick.  Always have Chapstick.

How Would you Describe your Style?  Classic lines with a statement piece, usually in a monotone color palette.  When I was younger, my mom told me my colors were "pastels," and I think I've just been rebelling again that ever since.

Current Revival Favorite: I am obsessed with the small Baggu leather pouch in Plum!

Hännah is pictured in some of her other Revival favorites, including our Striped Moto jacket, Nameless wolf tee, Tulle knit sweater in Orange, and the Denim Tapestry Skirt from Blu Pepper.  Come see all our new cute at Revival & Revival Online.

So. What exactly is "Transitional Fall" anyway?

Customer/Clothing Seller: "So, what is Revival buying right now? What are you looking for?"

Shopgirl: "Weeelllll, we buy seasonally, so right now we are buying for Transitional Fall."

Customer/Clothing Seller: "What exactly does Transitional Fall mean?"

Shopgirl: "Hmmmm, that is a tough one to define.  You know, stuff you want to wear now."

Oh my.  Like the term 'business casual,' transitional Fall is a term that we use at Revival, but most of us are not exactly sure of the meaning.  So we thought we would solve this mystery for both you and us!

What is transitional Fall:

These are items that can easily transition between late summer and early fall.

Items such as (but not limited to):
  • Jeans (preferably skinny/cigarette leg, mid-to-high rise)
  • Leather & faux leather boots
  • Lightweight cardigans
  • Open weave knits
  • Laying items (tanks, short sleeve tops, vests)
  • Fall weight jackets
  • Book bags
  • Backpacks
  • Lightweight scarves in fall colors
  • Shorts that can be worn with tights

Colors & Materials:
  • Colors and materials are always very important when transitioning seasonally.  The same dress in white an seem summery, while in maroon is fall-ish.
***Please remember: Revival buying decisions are made on a case by case basis and can change daily due to inventory levels, customer requests, and creative direction set by Sheila, our store owner.

So while there are exceptions to every rule, we are NOT buying right now:
  • Flip flops and sandals
  • Summer tank tops & dresses- pastel colors, lightweight cottons, etc.
  • Bathing suit cover-up style dresses
  • Swimwear
  • Spring jackets
  • Fall/Winter items- heavy sweaters, winter coats, cold weather boots
  • As always, items with stains, holes, or other damage
Also, please remember that Revival is now buying ONLY Monday- Friday.  Due to increased volume, we are no longer able to buy on weekends.

Click here to find out about our three payment options.

Happy Selling!

What's New: The New Baggu Backpack

Shopgirl Teah dons the Baggu backpack in Fig

It's sort almost Fall, friends!!  Even though we aren't 'technically' going back to school in a couple of weeks, the urge to find a new school bag still remains.  Luckily, Baggu is here to the rescue with a fab new backpack in four gorg Fall colors and amazing new leather accessories perfect for students, parents, 9-5ers, bike riders, Farmer's Marketers, and any others with things to carry!  (Full disclosure, we have a long standing MEGA brand crush on this Brooklyn-based line of practical, well made, boldly colored bags)

Last year, we began carrying their world-famous canvas backpack and it quickly became a best seller at Revival.  This year, Baggu has introduced a new and improved edition.  At $42, this multi use bag features a sleeker design, new colors, and some design tweaks that make a lot of sense.   So what's new...

Baggu canvas is known for it's amazing, rich colors.  Revival picked the best fall colors, but these are seriously cute anytime of the year.

  • As before, the Baggu backpack features adjustable backpack straps AND a top loop clutch handle for easy breezy carrying.
  • The size of the bag has been slightly increased (16" x 10.5" x 6") to perfectly fit a 13" laptop, while still being ideally sized for bike riding.
  • The bottom panel has been reinforced for extra durability.
  • The drawstring and metal lock closure have been added for security (and cuteness).

Side Zip Pocket:

  • Our FAVE new addition.
  • Baggu added a large side zipper pocket ideal for wallets and cell phones, and placed on the side for easy access while wearing.

Let's not forget the new Baggu is ideal for carrying around adorable dogs.  Take a look!  We think you will love.
